About Baker

Baker School is a TK-5 elementary school located in the San Gabriel Valley in El Monte, California. Baker’s multi-ethnic population is comprised of 474 students that are 91.77% Hispanic, 0.21% Asian Indian, 0.21% Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Filipino 0.42%, Cambodian 0.21%, Vietnamese 2.32%, Chinese 4.01%, and 0.84% White. Of these students, 46.2%% are considered Limited English Proficient (ELL) and 100% are considered Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Youth (EDY). In addition, 100% of our students receive a free or reduced lunch under a State-approved free lunch option.  The school, as is the district, participating in class size reduction in grades transitional kindergarten to third.  The current school wide ratio of students to teachers is 24 to 1.  In our fourth to fifth-grade classrooms, student enrollment is kept to no more than 32 to 1.  Baker School has three full-day Special Education classes from transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade, a Resource Specialist Program (RSP) and a Speech and Language program. Students in all subgroups, Disadvantaged (Title I), GATE, Special Education, and English Language Learners are included in all school-wide activities and events and are not isolated or segregated within the school or classrooms.  A comprehensive Head Start program is also located on the Baker campus.  In order to coordinate the success of these programs, transition meetings are held yearly. Our Head Start students are included in all school-wide activities and events. Through the use of the Title I funds, Baker utilizes the services of a site staff as well as site administration to provide professional development and intervention support for our students.  The staff encourages a positive understanding and appreciation for all students and celebrates their uniqueness.

Within the school is an extensive library that includes varied reading levels, chapter books, and resource materials.  The library also hosts three computers for student use.  Baker has a computer lab with 35 Apple iMac computers and a second lab containing a ChromeBooks cart with 34 devices for student access. Additionally, Baker has 12 ChromeBook carts providing a device for each student in grades 2nd-5th. We have 6 iPad carts in Kinder and 1st grade with a device for each student.  In TK and SDC, students have weekly access to the computer lab and daily access to classroom computers we are in the process of also giving them a set of iPads for class use.

The staff of seventy-six individuals consists of twenty-two teachers, RSP teacher, Speech Pathologist, Counselor, Psychologist, eight instructional aides, an office manager, an attendance clerk, a health aide, five custodians, a community liaison, a librarian, a technology technician, ten campus monitors,  principal, and other support staff. The staff works collaboratively toward meeting the goals for student improvement as outlined in this plan. The school is known for its positive climate, high academic standards, and the strong partnership with home and community. 

California academic and content standards are the foundation for standards-based instructions in all programs schools-wide, in addition to the regular classroom curriculum, students at Baker have opportunities to participate in a variety of extracurricular and extension activities.  Reading is Fundamental (RIF) will continue to be included as a school-wide reading initiative.  All students will participate in at least  three reading events that promote literacy and, throughout the year, students will be allowed to take books home to keep in order to build a home library. Students in transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade participate in Winter and Spring performances, and the Baker Reading and Math Challenges.    Baker also provides the Meet the Masters Art program to extend enhancement opportunities in the visual arts. Baker is also in Year 5 of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS).  

Students are recognized for a variety of achievements throughout the year.  Trimester award assemblies are held to recognize students from each class for Honor Roll, attendance, academic achievement, other achievements, and citizenship.  Throughout the year all students may earn awards for reaching milestone points using the Accelerated Reader program and through our Reading Challenge.  At the end of the year, awards are presented to students from each class in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Outstanding Growth, Citizenship, as well as Perfect Attendance and Honor Roll.

Through State ASES funding, Baker students have access to an after-school program, “THINK Together”, that allows them to acquire homework assistance, healthy lifestyle education, physical activity, citizenship building, technology, and enrichment. Currently, over 133 students in grades TK-5 participate in the program.  Additionally, 13 students currently participate as we try and fill our capacity of 30 in the Homework Center where homework and academic support are provided. The Site Coordinator has daily direct contact with the school to ensure collaboration and communication resulting in success for our students. 

The school seeks to promote parental involvement in the educational process as well as staff members, offering comprehensive programs and guides for the benefit of both the student and the parent. Both the local community and Baker Elementary benefit greatly from their collaboration and commitment to each other.

Parents and community members are encouraged to participate in organized activities, such as chaperoning, fund raising and special events.

This single, comprehensive school plan crafted to improve the academic performance of students also meets the Mountain View School District requirements for the Student Performance Improvement Plan.  Its use requires collection and analysis of student performance data, setting priorities for program improvements, rigorous use of effective research-based strategies, and ongoing monitoring of results.  The resulting school plan provides a structured means to improve teaching and learning to meet or exceed State content and performance standards.  To accomplish this purpose, the school plan includes elements found by educational research and professional practice to be essential to the success of plans to improve student academic performance.  In addition, the school plan meets content requirements for all programs for which the school has an allocation in the Consolidated Application and Reporting System (CARS). The programs include:

Baker Elementary School's Single Plan for Student Achievement includes instructional and auxiliary services to meet the special needs of English learners, educationally disadvantaged pupils, gifted and talented pupils, and pupils with exceptional needs. Additionally, Baker School's plan includes a Title I School-wide Program, which includes a description of the strategies that provide all children opportunities to reach proficient and advanced levels of academic achievement, using methods that are based upon scientific research or proven practice.

Developed by the School Site Council, with input from parents, staff, and the school community, the school plan is revised annually to address changes and areas of continued growth.

In summary, Baker School is a Title 1 school-wide project site.  All-State and federal programs will be coordinated to meet these goals.  All teachers meet ESEA's highly qualified teacher status.  All instructional assistants meet ESEA requirements.
